Federal electorates of Mallee and Wannon remain as Coalition strongholds

Federal electorates of Mallee and Wannon remain as Coalition strongholds after confirmation of results in last night's Federal Election. Anne Webster retained Mallee for the Nationals and Den Tehan consolidated his hold on Wannon for the Liberals.

Dr Webster, attempting to hold the historic Nationals seat vacated by Andrew Broad, experienced a swing away as a field including 12 other candidates consumed their share of votes.

With 79% of the Wannon vote counted, Mr Tehan, Education Minister in the Morrison government, had received 51.3% of the primary vote.

Labor’s Maurice Billi, who lives in Stawell, a city that recently joined Wannon from Mallee in an electoral boundary shake up has received 26.2% of first preference votes.

Mr Tehan and Dr Webster will serve in a Morrison government after Prime Minister Morrison accepted a phone call from Labour Leader Bill Shorten conceding defeat last night.

Updated count from the Australian Electoral Commission.
